On Withdrawal from Europe

It has been suggested, and that is what you are supposed to believe, that Britain could only leave the EU with the consent of all other members which would not be forthcoming. Like so many things associated with the European Project this is not true.

Our involvement depends not on treaties or Memoranda of Agreement or the consent of others but on the simple fact of the European Communities Act 1972, by which the British Parliament stripped itself of the sole right to make Law in this realm and subordinated British Law to Community Law in case of conflict. By that Act Britain ceased to be a sovereign independent Nation State and became an increasingly impotent part of a greater political whole.

Parliament however can repeal that Act of 1972 and by so doing would sever the link and would regain its status as the sovereign power, and Britain would once again be a sovereign Nation State. The legal case is clearly explained in the speeches by Enoch Powell advertised elsewhere in this document.

The only obstacle is the political establishment which includes the 3 main political parties, the newspapers notwithstanding their alleged eurosceptic stance, and the BBC which is supposed to be neutral and unbiased. They are all committed to Britain remaining in perpetuity as a subordinate province in a European State. They do all they can to denigrate Britain's past and to deny its future existence to the extent of removing it from the map and removing English as a recognised nationality in the UK census form. This is really what the drive to promote Britishness is all about - an intention over time to eliminate the idea of Englishness. Why the English tolerate this sort of clandestine activity by their elected representatives is difficult to understand. Perhaps they are prepared to tolerate a great deal in exchange for a quiet life.

Many moves have been aimed at destroying the uniqueness of England. First of all it was the currency, which abandoned the duo decimal system and adopted metrication notwithstanding that 12 is a much more versatile figure than 10. Other moves particularly in relation to weights and measures have not been so successful. They ignore the fact that the world's largest economy, the USA, still uses Imperial measure. Doorstep delivery of milk has been a target and we may be on the point of losing our dairy herds because they are uneconomic to maintain. The once prized beef industry has been seriously damaged and it is difficult not to see intent. Similarly the Post Office which as it has existed in Britain was a Victorian invention is presently being destroyed, not only by the advent of e-mail but by deliberate policy (EU Directive (97/67/EC).

We are told of grave economic consequences which would follow if we were to leave; of thousands of jobs which depend on trade with Europe. We are insistently told that the majority of our trade is now with the continent. Like much else about Europe that is not true. An appearance of truth is given by including in the figures all those items, and they are a substantial number, which go to Rotterdam for onward transmission around the world.

The boot is really on the other foot. The British Isles are the continent's biggest customer. The continental members do far more trade with us than we do with them. We have a staggering deficit on our trade across the Channel which is carried by our greater surplus with the rest of the world. Are they suddenly going to stop selling to Britain out of pique? I think not.

All the ingredients are present for a successful negotiation of an arms length relationship with the EU such as is enjoyed by Norway or Switzerland and even, I understand, Mexico. Norway and Switzerland are the most prosperous per capita nations of Europe. There is no reason why Britain would not prosper as it has outside the euro zone.

The advantages of departure from the EU are immediate and obvious. Firstly it would be possible to pursue policies which are in the interests of the people of Britain. We would be once again, as we should be, a sovereign independent Nation State. We would cease to pour billions of pounds into a corrupt black hole called Europe. It would no longer be necessary for politicians to witter about reforming the CAP which is never going to happen. We would be free to grow what we can and buy in the best market what we cannot, which would be an additional saving. We would re-establish our territorial waters and exclude the fishing fleets of continental nations except on our terms. Fish stocks would recover and an important element in our diet would no longer be under threat.

There would be much mischievous interference to put right. Tens of thousands of regulations covering business, commerce, industry and our daily lives have originated in Brussels and been enacted into British Law by a subordinate Parliament.

It would no longer be necessary for British Governments to live the lie that they are in control. They would actually be in control, responsible and accountable. They could be removed in the event of manifest failure which is impossible so far as the government in Brussels is concerned. Elections might even recover some of their significance though it would not be wise to hold the breath.

We would recover control of our borders and if our politicians had the guts we would be able to say who comes and who goes. It would be possible to tackle the subject of illegals. It is monstrous that there could be as many as half a million people in these islands who have no right to be here. It is even more monstrous that government does not know who they are, how many they are, and does not seem to care. They have an impact on the provision of housing, they have an impact on crime. Their presence is a crime in the first place and they of necessity are obliged to earn a living illegally. Unfortunately a percentage of them do that by petty theft and some by more sophisticated scams as the courts testify.

There is no need, as I have said, to embark upon endless self defeating negotiations in order to get out. All that is necessary is a one clause Bill to pass through Parliament repealing the Act of 1972. Given the will it could be done in a day. Thereby we would no longer be part of the EU. Brussels would have no authority in the UK. From there it would be necessary to rearrange our relationship with the EU as a sovereign Nation State able to do as it will for its own benefit.

It so happens that we have a near parallel within the UK .The Scottish Nationalists desire to break the union with England which depends on a treaty signed in 1707. There are varying views as to the desirability of such a step but nobody as yet has suggested that they could not do it because of a Treaty. It would involve tearing up the treaty but history is littered with such events. Circumstances change and policies tend to vary accordingly.

The British people whose instinct is to be free have a battle on their hands. The politicians and the political establishment whose voice they are do not wish them to be free. By elaborate long maintained deception they have been betrayed not exactly into slavery but into subordination. Furthermore by banishing any talk of freedom from political debate the three parties by what they call consensus effectively deny any voice to electors. Anybody who raises the subject is immediately labelled extremist which equates with racist and terrorist as a term of abuse.

To be free the electorate has to wrest back control at the first electoral opportunity. They cannot do that by staying at home or by voting for any of the three preferred false alternatives which the establishment offers to them. There has to be a new direction. There has to be a government that believes in English independence; in a free and independent UK if it is so willed.
